Canada fans celebrate historic World Cup knockout win in Toronto | ABS-CBN News

Canada fans erupted in cheers at the Canada Soccer House in Toronto on Sunday (June 28) as the national team scored against South Africa in their World Cup 2026 round-of-32 match. Supporters watching the game at the downtown venue applauded, danced and waved Canadian colours after the final whistle, celebrating what several described as a major moment for soccer in the country. "At the beginning, I was stressed. I mean, this is Canada's biggest game ever," said Canada fan Chromiu Hockridge, 20. "But the boys showed out today. I feel like in the second half they took over the game." Fans said the atmosphere peaked when Canada found the net. "When the goal happened, it just felt like everything exploded," said Gauri Rawat, 19. "At the end, the dancing, it was just incredible." Stephen Eustaquio hammered home a rasping strike from the edge of the penalty area in the 92nd minute to give Canada a 1-0 victory. South Africa, who had seemed content to play for extra time and a possible penalty shootout, made a few furious but unsuccessful attempts to level before the final whistle as the sun broke through the clouds at Los Angeles Stadium. Canada will next face either the Netherlands or Morocco on July 4 in Houston for a place in the quarter-finals.
