It is a classic action movie scenario: our hero, pursued by gun-toting baddies, finds themselves cornered at the end of a long pier. Unfortunately for our villains, the water proves an effective shield, their bullets penetrating only a few feet before stopping dead and tumbling harmlessly to the seafloor, leaving our hero unscathed. Fooled by their foe’s iron lungs, the baddies soon give up and drive away, leaving our hero to fight another day. But while this simple tactic has appeared in countless films, television shows, and video games, would it really work in real life?
