His life story is important because it led to the birth of the great warrior Bhishma and eventually to the events that caused the Kurukshetra war. 1️⃣ Birth and Early Life Shantanu was the son of King Pratipa. He became the king of Hastinapura and ruled with great justice and dharma. People loved him for his wisdom and kindness. 2️⃣ Marriage with Goddess Ganga One day while hunting near the river Ganga, Shantanu saw a beautiful woman. She was actually the river goddess Ganga in human form. Shantanu fell in love and asked her to marry him. Ganga agreed but made one condition: He should never question anything she did. Shantanu accepted. After marriage, Ganga gave birth to eight sons. But each time a child was born, she took the baby to the river and drowned it. Shantanu was shocked but remembered his promise and stayed silent. When the eighth child was born and Ganga tried to drown him, Shantanu finally stopped her. Because he broke the promise, Ganga left him. She revealed that the children were eight cursed Vasus who needed to be freed from earthly life. The last child would live a long life. That child was Devavrata, later known as Bhishma.
