UPDF and SNA Conduct Joint Security Patrol in Barawe Sub-Sector Barawe, Somalia | 12 July 2026 Troops of the Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF) serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), together with the Somali National Army (SNA), conducted a joint security patrol in the Barawe Sub-Sector on Saturday as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security, reassure the local population, and promote lasting peace and stability in the area. The joint operation was led by the Battle Group 45 Commander, Colonel Justus Musenene, alongside his Somali National Army counterpart, the Commander of the SNA 66 Brigade, Colonel Abdurahman Elmi. Speaking during the patrol, Colonel Musenene said the operation was intended to enhance security, build public confidence, and deny Al-Shabaab terrorists the freedom to operate within the region. He commended the close cooperation between the UPDF, the Somali National Army, and the local community, noting that their partnership remains critical to maintaining security. "Today's patrol demonstrates teamwork, comradeship, and what we can achieve when we work together," said Colonel Musenene. He added that, in line with AUSSOM's mandate, UPDF troops continue to mentor and support their SNA counterparts while strengthening trust and cooperation with the civilian population. Colonel Musenene also urged Al-Shabaab militants to surrender peacefully to the Somali Government and AUSSOM forces or face decisive military action. "We know where you are, and we're coming for you. The better option is to surrender if you want to be safe," he warned. The Commander of the SNA 66 Brigade, Colonel Abdurahman Elmi, echoed the same message and called upon residents of Barawe to continue supporting security efforts by sharing timely information with security agencies. "This joint patrol with our UPDF comrades proves that together we are stronger. To the people of Barawe, your safety comes first. To the enemy, know that the SNA and AUSSOM remain united and will not allow anyone to disrupt the prevailing peace in this region," he said. Colonel Abdurahman commended UPDF troops for their professionalism, dedication, and continued support in the fight against Al-Shabaab, pledging sustained cooperation between the two forces. Residents who interacted with the patrol welcomed the joint security presence and reaffirmed their commitment to working with security forces by providing information that contributes to peace and stability. The commanders noted that similar joint security patrols will continue across the Barawe Sub-Sector to maintain pressure on terrorist elements, enhance public safety, and create a secure environment for development. The operation was attended by the Commanding Officer of the 145 Infantry Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Geoffrey Ochan; the Embresco Forward Operating Base Commander, Major Francis Odede; the Battle Group 45 Military Information Officer, Major David Akandwanaho; as well as officers and troops from the UPDF and the Somali National Army.
