Practicing | Abide: Moving at the Pace of Grace

In John 15, Jesus describes Himself as the true Vine and His Father as the Gardener. A vine is completely dependent on the gardener for its care, nourishment, and growth. The vine doesn't strive, force, or make things happen on its own—it remains connected. Yet so often I find myself doing the opposite. I effort. I strive. I try to control outcomes and make things happen instead of abiding in God. To abide means to dwell, remain, or stay. For many of us, stillness can feel uncomfortable because we're accustomed to moving at 70 miles per hour. The thought of slowing down can be overwhelming. One simple way to practice abiding is to go for a walk. Jesus walked almost everywhere He went. He moved at a pace that made room for interruptions, conversations, compassion, and the work of His Father. I like to call it the pace of grace. Perhaps part of learning to abide is learning the art of acceleration and deceleration—knowing when to move and when to slow down, while remaining connected to the One who directs our steps.
