Hylaeosaurus | The Forgotten of the First Dinosaurs | Dino Basics

Being the first can often bring a significant amount of prestige and fame, and this is no different in the world of dinosaurs...most of the time. Iguanodon today is still wildly known obviously helped by its numerous media appearances, and while Megalosaurus struggled with its identity for a few decades, it still holds a considerable amount of recognition for modern audiences. But there is one more dinosaur described prior to the creation of the Dinosauria grouping...and that's Hylaeosaurus. The Hylaeosaurus is rarely discussed or represented in dinosaur media, which may come across as odd. Sure it wasn't that big, and there are plenty of other ankylosaurians to steal the spotlight, but the Hylaeosaurus is still significant as one of the earliest dinosaurs, and its well armored body and spiky physique is nothing to scoff at. So, what happened? Why was this dinosaur forgotten? And is there anything that makes this creature all that notable? Let's find out!
