St Johns Eve - Bon(e)fire Night from Co. Mayo

If you are after 1st hand accounts of St. John’s Eve bonfires and the folklore and customs surrounding them, have a listen to these Mayo people that I recorded in 2008. In the opening clip a women chats about calling it ‘bone’fire night and how she went looking for bones for her fire on that night. Also loads around the tradition of taking the ashes and cinders from the fire and putting them in the fields and gardens to protect the growing crops. Great material here and as I said it is direct from source. Enjoy.
