The Town They Drowned: 700 Deaths and the Dark Secret Beneath Lake Lanier - EP4
Beneath 38,500 acres of crystal blue water in Georgia lies a town the world tried to forget — and the bodies of nearly 400 people whose graves were never moved before the water came. Lake Lanier is one of America's most visited reservoirs. It's also one of the deadliest. Since 1958, over 700 people have drowned in its waters — many in calm, shallow conditions. Survivors describe the same nightmare: a cold hand, an invisible grip, pulling them down. In this 65-minute documentary, we trace the lake's terrifying history back to 1912 — to the lynching of three Black men, the violent expulsion of 1,100 Black residents from Forsyth County, and the U.S. government's 1956 decision to flood the town of Oscarville over their forgotten graves. This is the true story of Lake Lanier — a story of injustice, vengeance, and a debt that has never been paid. 📜 Sources include: Georgia State Archives, Forsyth County Historical Society, the Equal Justice Initiative, Patrick Phillips' "Blood at the Root," U.S. Army Corps of Engineers records, and WSB-TV Atlanta news archives. ⚠️ This video contains real historical content about racial violence and depicts dramatized scenes for storytelling. Viewer discretion advised. 🕯 Dedicated to the memory of those whose names were buried beneath the water. #LakeLanier #Oscarville #ForsythCounty #GeorgiaHistory #HauntedLake #TrueCrime #UnsolvedMysteries #AmericanHistory #BlackHistory #ParanormalStories #HauntedAmerica #CursedPlaces #BufordDam #DrownedTown #HistoryUncovered #GhostStories #TrueStory #DocumentaryFilm #HorrorDocumentary #DarkHistory #MaeCrow #BloodAtTheRoot #UnpaidDebt #AtlantaHistory #HiddenHistory #SpookyStories #LostTowns #SubmergedTown #LakeGhost #truehaunting
