The left eye is represented by the letter ang, and the right eye is represented by the letter ah. When combined, "Ang" and "Ah" become "OM," which is the name of Sang Hyang Widhi. However, if we look at the meaning of the word, "Ngulap" comes from the word "Ulap" (Old Javanese and Balinese), which means "glare." The "glare" referred to here is the state of the eye when looking at or seeing sunlight. "Ulap-ulap" in Balinese means a rectangular or square-shaped instrument made from a piece of white cloth inscribed with sacred letters, which, according to Hinduism, are said to possess magical powers. It is usually placed in the front yard of a building, under the eaves of the house, during the "ngulap ngambe" ceremony of that building. The purpose is to invoke God Almighty, or Ida Sang Hyang Widhi, to prevent any disturbing elements from being dazzled.
