But the former prime minister showed no hesitation whatsoever. He began the introduction in a low voice, gradually becoming more fluent, occasionally eliciting laughter, and at the climax, raising both hands in passionate emotion, concluding his 80-minute performance (more like a lecture) as if conducting his beloved orchestra. The content was essentially a compilation of his previous statements on phasing out nuclear power, but he raised his voice when discussing the issue of apartments without toilets. He acknowledged that he shared the same understanding as pro-nuclear advocates up to the point that "the final disposal method for nuclear waste has been technically settled, and the problem is that a disposal site hasn't been found," but then emphasized the differences beyond that point. In other words, while proponents argue that finding a disposal site is the role of politics, and that any politician who fails to do so is at fault, Koizumi argued that claiming that something that couldn't be done before the Fukushima nuclear accident can now be done is far more irresponsible. The weight of Koizumi's press conference became apparent afterward. What was particularly striking was his almost provocative call for a policy change, specifically naming Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and stating, "A nuclear-free future is possible if the Prime Minister makes the decision," "It's far more environmentally friendly than postal privatization," "Even within the Liberal Democratic Party, if you look closely, it's about half and half (pro-nuclear and anti-nuclear)," and "Ultimately, it's a matter of the Prime Minister's judgment and insight." These were sharp remarks made possible by the high-profile nature of the press conference. It gave the impression that the daring Koizumi is still very much alive. Another point was his unhesitating response to a question from the audience, "When will it be zero?", with "Immediate zero would be best," which was a bolder stance than usual. This, too, is likely an effect of the press conference. How will Prime Minister Abe respond to this direct statement? Will he be able to ignore it?
