Workington is an ancient market and industrial town at the mouth of the River Derwent and parts of the town date to Roman times. Most of its development happened during the 18th century because of the local iron ore and coal pits. It is located 8 miles from Whitehaven and 5 miles from Maryport and these port competed for dominance during the industrial revolution. The place-name Workington is first mentioned in an Anglo-Saxon charter of 946, as Wurcingtun and later, in 1150, as Wirchingetona, i.e. "the town of Weorc". The iron-ore field produced a high grade phosphorus-free haematite and, after Sir Henry Bessemer invented the Bessemer process, the world's first large-scale steelworks developed in the town. The heavy industry has all closed but the small port has an enclosed commercial dock (the Prince of Wales Dock) with seven berths and its handles 300,000 tonnes of cargo annually. The port is well connected to the rail network but the area has more limited road connections.
