Khao San Road opened for water fights from noon, resulting in a huge influx of tourists, including famous Filipino influencer Sinon Loresca, who flies directly from the Philippines to celebrate Songkran in Thailand every year. He said that he previously celebrated on Silom Road, and this was his first time on Khao San Road. They stroll along the streets, some ride motorcycles or sit in the back of pickup trucks. Shops along the way set up water tanks for a fun water fight. Officials were busy clearing the area, while some tourists were still having fun and said they'd definitely come back next year. Even though Songkran is over, some tourists are still stranded. Like this group of three Thai-Malaysian women, who partied until dawn after Songkran ended. They told reporters they arrived in Khao San Road at 8 pm but didn't realize it was morning yet. They admitted they were very impressed with Khao San Road's Songkran celebrations, paying tens of thousands of baht for their plane tickets, and plan to return next year. They defined Songkran as "Amazing," "Definitely coming again," and "Superb." They also mentioned that Malaysia has adopted the Thai Songkran tradition, claiming it as "Original from Thailand," confirming that Songkran originated in Thailand, not another country. Regarding the cleanup, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) officials mobilized water trucks and garbage trucks to clear the area from 5 am to restore the streets. The reporter observed that although the use of powder was prohibited on Khao San Road, the streets were covered in white powder. Officials stated that while powder play was forbidden on Khao San Road, it was allowed on surrounding streets. They also said the cleanup wasn't difficult or tiring, and they were relaxed and ready to tackle it again next year. The cleaning wasn't just the BMA officials' responsibility; some business owners also helped. They said Khao San Road had been very quiet before, but the Songkran festival brought vibrancy and revived the economy. They hope the economy will improve after the Thai New Year, especially regarding lower fuel costs, as high fuel prices have increased costs for everything. This sentiment aligns with that of the Khao San Road Business Association. Hotel bookings for tourists have decreased by about 20% due to the global economic crisis, but the number of tourists has increased, especially from China, Korea, and India. This has generated approximately 140-150 million baht in revenue, resulting in an overall economic growth of about 10% on Khao San Road during the festival compared to last year. Mr. Siamrat Ruangnam, Director of Phra Nakhon District, stated that the overall organization of the Songkran festival on Khao San Road over the past three days went smoothly, incorporating improvements from last year. He noted that the approximately 200,000 tourists who visited Khao San Road over the three days were a decrease of about 30% compared to last year. He added that more promotional efforts will be undertaken next year to stimulate the local economy. Regarding waste management, it is estimated that 140-1450 tons of waste will be generated in these three days, which is similar to last year.
