Caline CP-59 Press Pass Driver & DI For Bass: Technical Review
@jobass @abominablemusic @MyBassistChris Thank you for demoing this pedal! At the time of recording this video I have an older version of the schematics, but the current version has very minor differences. The grounding scheme is wrong for the XLR. It looks to be corrected for The Wine Cellar. XLR pin 1 is only referenced to AGND, aka signal ground. This is the old method and incorrect way of grounding an XLR. I have brought this issue up with Caline and they are aware. The engineer in Japan who designed this pedal with Caline is looking into fixing the problem. Functional specs are below. THIS IS NOT AN OVERDRIVE PEDAL. It's a simple clean tone shaping DI box. My vote is still on the Wine Cellar being the better pedal. This is still a usable pedal and you can see the evolution of the design/features being the press pass was made earlier (CP-59) vs the Wine Cellar (CP-60) Bass is 100hz center, Mid is 1khz centered, and High is 4k centered, each 12db cut/boost. 1/4" in and out jacks are buffered by 4580 opamps. the footswitch engages the tone circuit to the buffered circuit. the pedal requires 9vdc to pass the unaltered signal. The Change "Gain/GND Lift" switch is doing two things. 1. When in the down position in terms of gain there is full gain at the 1/4" (instrument level) and XLR (mic level) outputs. When in the up position, the gain at both the outputs is reduced by 6db. 2. For the grounding function: when the switch is in the down position it ties the analog signal ground to chassis/earth ground. When the switch is in the up position it lifts earth/chassis from signal ground. ***Without diving into board modifications I would suggest using a pin 1 ground lift adapter like the Hosa GLT-255 when using the XLR in conjunction with the 1/4" outlets. This ensures that there won't be any ground loops between your equipment.
