The “Ugly” Truth About Chatsworth Nobody Talks About… (Silverglen Nature Reserve)

Silverglen Nature Reserve isn’t just another location… it’s a place with two completely different stories. We (Wade, Lee, Nasser & Adam) set out to explore this 460-hectare reserve in Chatsworth, Durban — a site once known for its rich biodiversity, over 150 bird species, and home to the Umlaas Medicinal Plant Nursery, one of South Africa’s largest indigenous plant nurseries focused on sustainable use. But that’s only half the story. Over the years, Silverglen has become something else entirely. The area has faced: Ongoing security threats and violent crime Reports of it being used as a dumping ground for victims Land invasions that have reshaped parts of the reserve The tragic loss of municipal rangers in 2021, highlighting just how dangerous it became What was once a space for education, conservation, and peace… is now largely abandoned by the public. This video isn’t just about exploring a place — it’s about understanding how something valuable can change over time, and what it feels like to step into that reality today. ⚠️ For safety, we were accompanied by security throughout this shoot Huge thank you to @Ptalarms_sa (Instagram & TikTok) for making this possible. 📍 Chatsworth, Durban, South Africa If you’ve ever been here before — or have your own thoughts on places like this — drop a comment below.
