Landslides Almost Ended My Peru Motorcycle Trip

What should have been a beautiful ride back to Cusco turned into one of the most stressful days of my Peru motorcycle adventure. Leaving Santa Teresa, we were thwarted by landslides again and again. Four separate attempts to leave the area ended with blocked roads, forcing us to turn around and rethink our options. At one point, we were discussing backup plans that included buses, trains through Aguas Calientes, or even staying another night and hoping the road crews could clear a path. On our fourth attempt, after waiting roadside while crews stabilized the mountain and cleared debris, we were finally allowed through - ahem, over! - the dirt and rocks. Even then,, that didn’t stop the mountain from throwing huge rocks down the steep slopes as we continued on. This nearly ended the trip - multiple times. Once free from landslides, the day transformed completely. Under blue skies and perfect riding weather, we followed some of the most beautiful roads of the journey through Peru’s Sacred Valley. Towering mountains, deep valleys, traditional villages, a funeral procession, and eventually the chaos of Cusco traffic made for an unforgettable ride back into the city. Lastly, it ended up being the start of Holy Week and I stumbled into massive crowds for the Lord of Earthquakes procession. From near disaster to some of the best riding of the entire trip, this was the final day of riding, and one I’ll never forget.
