We start today with a brief explanation of what really happened on that famous date of July 4, 1776, whose 250th anniversary we will be commemorating in just a few days. July 4, 1776, occupies a central place in the history of the United States, but American independence wasn't born in a single day or with a single declaration. Behind that day lies a much broader political, military, and intellectual process that transformed the Atlantic world. In this new course, we will explore the years that forged the modern United States: from 1754, with the beginning of the imperial tensions that would lead to war, to 1789, when the new republic began to consolidate its institutions and its political project.
