Gwoka traditionnel, which has recently been recognized by Unesco, has seven recognized and codified rhythms on which the percussionists and singer improvise freely. All were recorded between 1979 and 1991, and are some examples of how some groups and artists at the time, though rooted in traditional Gwoka, were keen to expand and experiment with hybridizing the music, introducing new instruments like a synth, drum machine, guitar, saxophone etc. Their styles vary widely but can broadly be grouped under the 'Gwoka Moderne' bracket. My dad's been living in Guadeloupe for 25+ years, hence my interest in this music.
