'NO ONE was asked to pay for an award!' - Ministerial Awards organiser clashes with Kpessa-Whyte

Organisers of the Ghana Ministers of State Excellence Honours have rejected claims that they attempted to secure sponsorship from the Director-General of the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), Prof. Michael Kpessa-Whyte, in exchange for an award. The clarification follows public debate after Prof. Kpessa-Whyte revealed he was selected for a “Best CEO of the Year” award and invited to a ceremony at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel, alongside a sponsorship proposal reportedly ranging from GH¢25,000 to GH¢50,000. Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Chief Executive Officer of Big Events Ghana, Prince Mackay, denied that the organisers targeted the SIGA boss personally, explaining that the sponsorship request was institutionally directed. He maintained that the organisers did not require any individual to pay for awards, stressing that sponsorship letters are a standard part of event organisation. The awards scheme has recently come under scrutiny after recognising several public officials, including Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as Overall Best Minister of the Year.
