Stuck and Alone on the Trail | Thru-Hike Gone Wrong on the Continental Divide Trail
In March 2015, Stephen "Otter" Olshansky planned an extensive thru-hike along the California coast, heading east through Oregon to Idaho, where he heard of a proposed trail around the state's edge. It was August around this time he made this decision to complete the Continental Divide Trail, a very late time to hike this trail CDT toward New Mexico. Otter was eager to begin his trek, as he had a commitment as a golf pro awaiting him. On November 14, 2015, Otter was dropped off at Cumbres Pass by a trail angel, who requested Otter to call when he reached Ghost Ranch, 75 miles south. Carrying a substantial two-week supply of food, Otter set off down the snowy trail.
