The two overlapping lines representing the ink orchid resemble the eye of a phoenix, hence the name "Bongan" (鳳眼). The phoenix, a mythical sacred animal, is a collective term for the male "Bong" (鳳) and the female "Hwang" (凰). While their appearance varies across various texts, the ultimate form of the phoenix is ​​generally considered to be the "eye" (眼). This phoenix eye (Bongan) is found in the space between the orchid lines. However, a line is drawn to divide this space diagonally, dividing it. This is called "Pabongan" (破鳳眼), meaning "broken phoenix eye." This theory has often been used to explain the leaf structure of ink orchids. While this explanation may seem outdated, it remains in use today as it represents the most stable and fundamental framework for leaf formation. However, the focus of today's lesson is the "broken line." When drawing ink lines that vary in thickness according to the thickness of an orchid leaf, a thinning point appears in the middle of the leaf. Sometimes, if the brush is drawn too thin, it can break. However, if the line is broken in the middle and the meaning is still conveyed, it is considered a single leaf. However, this break is not intentional, as it is a result of the variation in thickness and flow of the leaf. This video focuses on intentionally broken lines. When drawing an orchid leaf, I intentionally break the line in the middle and draw the flower after drawing the entire leaf.
