The program "Objetivo Planeta" delves into a sense we often pay little attention to, even though we use it some 23,000 times a day: smell. Each breath carries thousands of molecules that our brain transforms into memories, emotions, and signals that guide us without our conscious awareness. While many animals depend entirely on this sense, we have largely forgotten it, and in doing so, we lose a vast amount of information that is literally floating in the air. To better understand this invisible universe, Lorenzo Milá speaks with researcher Laura López-Mascaraque, from the Cajal Neuroscience Center (CSIC), author of "The Fascinating Universe of Smell," which explains why smell is not a minor sense: it is connected to the areas of the brain that manage emotions and memory, which is why a scent can quickly transport us back to a moment in our childhood. The program also showcases how technology is making surprising strides with so-called electronic noses, devices capable of detecting diseases even before the first symptoms appear.
