CHRISTIAN DIOR Spring Summer 2011 Haute Couture Paris 4K - Canale Moda

John Galliano’s Spring 2011 Haute Couture collection for Christian Dior paid tribute to illustrator René Gruau, whose work defined much of the house’s imagery in the 1940s and 1950s. The designs translated the visual language of Gruau’s drawings graphite smears, pencil strokes, erasure marks, and gouache washes into fabric, embroidery, and construction techniques. Silhouettes referenced Dior’s New Look, with skirts that flared from corseted waists or tapered pencil-thin below rounded hips. Tops and gowns were draped and swagged in voluminous forms, while some pieces incorporated marabou, ostrich feathers, or sequins to evoke brushstrokes and ink markings. Seven layers of tulle were used to produce dégradé effects, while embroidery placed on one side of the fabric created relief-like shadows. Accessories included Stephen Jones’s hats, designed as trompe l’oeil strokes of paint. Hair, styled by Orlando Pita, and makeup, by Pat McGrath, reproduced the stylized features of Gruau’s illustrated figures. Join our community!
