LEICA MONOPAN 50.LA PROVA SUL CAMPO
LEICA MONOPAN. FIELD TEST https://www.gerardobonomo.it/2025/09/... One hundred years after the market launch of the first Leica, the Leica I or Leica A, on August 21, 2025, Leica introduced its first film, the Leica Monopan 50. Black and white, 50 ISO, a resolution of 280 lines/mm, and a spectral sensitivity exceeding 750 nanometers, making it hyperpanchromatic. Coated on a PET base. An excellent tonal balance, Leica Monopan 50 performs best when exposed and developed carefully, and when appropriate filters are used during shooting, when necessary, from medium yellow to orange, from red 25 and 29 A to IR 720, which literally transforms it into an infrared film. Although the news has never been made official, it's possible that Leica turned to Adox for the film's production. (Naturally, the two films were compared under the same shooting conditions.) An unusual sensitivity that allows for incredible resolution and a virtual absence of grain; paired with Leica's proverbial extremely fast lenses, it's a film that can easily be used handheld. We compared it with its "potential" predecessor, the Adox HR-50, and then used it in various situations, mostly in static shots, on a tripod, and with a tethered shutter release, for a better analysis of the results, without the risk of camera shake. A film that satisfied us, on the one hand, and a very important event in the field of black and white photography, on the other. At a time when market misinterpretations are deeming one of the most important brands in global film production as moribund, the fact that a renowned company like Leica has decided to market a black and white film says the opposite about the life expectancy of film—here in black and white, but generalized to color as well.
