ЭМИГРАЦИЯ // Самые опасные иллюзии

Artem Karpavichus is a practicing psychologist, a Master's degree holder in the Department of Psychotherapy and Psychological Counseling, and an author. 📌 "Emotional Intelligence: From Inner Chaos to Awareness" https://karpavichus.com/intellekt-emo... https://karpavichus.com/intellekt-emo... https://karpavichus.com/intellekt-emo... 📕 MY BOOK "Breaking Up, Not Staying" published by AST is available at any bookstore, on WB, and on Litres: https://www.litres.ru/book/artem-karp... Emigration is normal for humanity, but it almost always leads to a profound psychological crisis. Why did Schwarzenegger, Madonna, Rachmaninoff, Musk, Garbo, Mercury, Nabokov, Tsvetaeva, Brodsky, Theron, and Freud openly talk about the difficulties of moving? And how is modern immigration different from everything that came before? In this lecture, we explore the psychology of migrant adaptation: separation from their native culture, the information bubble, nostalgia, the language barrier, a crisis of motivation, and a blow to self-esteem. We discuss Alexander Yarkin's research (2025) on how the internet is changing integration: modern migrants are subjectively happier, but they learn the language worse, are less likely to naturalize, and interact less with locals. Why can you become "one of the locals" in the US in the first generation, while in Europe—even with perfect language skills—you can forever remain an outsider? Why adapt at all if you're never going to become "one of the locals"? And why is the emotional layer of a foreign language weaker than your native one, making it so difficult to make local friends? At the end, there are practical recommendations: why A2 language is accessible to everyone, why developing emotional intelligence is essential when adapting, and why live communication within a 50-kilometer radius is more important than virtual calls. Enjoy watching! And give me a like – it will be a great positive reinforcement for me 😉 ⏱ Timestamps 00:00 Emigration – the norm of humanity and a psychological crisis 00:16 Arnold Schwarzenegger: the difficult move from Austria to the USA 00:21 Madonna: ten years in London 00:24 Sergei Rachmaninoff: longing for Russia in diaries and letters 00:44 Elon Musk: stress and loneliness after moving from South Africa 00:53 Greta Garbo, Freddie Mercury, Nabokov, Tsvetaeva, Brodsky, Theron, Freud 01:40 Modern immigration is infinitely different from the past 02:03 30 years ago, an emigrant was completely cut off from the information field of his homeland 02:31 Satellite channels and international communications: access to the homeland was limited 03:48 The pre-internet era forced adaptation: Language, work, local connections 04:54 Today, you can live in any country but still remain in an information bubble 05:23 Alexander Yarkin's study: is the melting pot still melting? 06:53 Conclusion 1: The internet of the homeland reduces language proficiency and naturalization 07:07 Conclusion 2: The effect is stronger among the young, the poorly educated, and those with family left behind 07:35 Conclusion 3: The happiness paradox - subjectively better, but worse integration 08:48 Conclusion 4: Less time interacting with locals 09:02 Conclusion 5: No increase in desire to return to the homeland 10:29 Why motivation to adapt in the US is higher than in Europe 11:11 In the US, you can become one of the first generation 13:25 In Europe, even if you know the language perfectly, you will remain an outsider 14:33 The mental suitcase: living out of a suitcase or putting it on shelves 14:43 Socialization from Scratch: An Adult Immigrant Like a Three-Year-Old 15:29 A Blow to Self-Esteem and the Search for Local Friends-Guides 16:41 A Foreign Language is Emotionally Impoverished, While Friendship is Built on Emotions 18:20 Why Swiss Germans, Italians, and French Have Mostly "Inner" Friends 20:33 Why Become an Inner-Group?
