Time Lapse | Drawing | Baroque Scallop Ornament
Hey what’s up guys? Kevin here. Welcome to my channel. This time lapse video is to show you how I draw a baroque ornament. I love ornament so badly because they look gorgeous. Three years ago, I started to learn how to write copperplate letters. It’s a style of calligraphy. The foundation of copperplate letters does help me understand the foundation of the ornaments. I also read a lot of books and analyzed the theory of designing ornaments. It took me quite a while to get a hang of it. I love doing my artworks with charcoal, soft pastel, graphite pencils and coloured pencils. And This baroque scallop ornament was done with a 9B cretacolour graphite pencil and Faber-castell polychromos coloured pencils. For paper, I used Canson 1557 180g. Now let’s look at the video! I altered my draft a lot because it was an “impromptu”, basically I had had a draft in my mind but i needed to alter it to get a better result. Then it’s time to add shades. The scallop, the acanthus leaves down there and the pearls are plaster cast, so I simply used graphite pencils to do the shades. For the big acanthus leaves on both sides of the scallop, I coloured them in gold with coloured pencils. It’s quite challenging to design the whole piece. No matter you are doing a small piece like this or a cartouche with angels, grotesque, acanthus leaves and stuff, the whole piece has to be balanced. It doesn’t mean both sides have to be exact same to each other, but balanced. Or more precisely - HARMONY. Also, the reflection of gold is another challenging thing, as i dont have any reference to follow how the piece of metal reflects the light. Ok! Let me tell you why i love drawing the ornament in white and gold. The idea of the combination of using white and gold on ornaments is basically from the white churches in Germany. Not only does it look simple, but also it looks pure and sacred. I really appreciate if you can visit my Facebook page and my instagram where you will find all my artworks.
