O Cimento Portland Está Matando Suas Paredes de Tijolo

Portland cement seems strong, modern, and reliable. But in many brick walls, it may be creating exactly the problem it's supposed to prevent: cracking, trapped moisture, peeling, and slow masonry destruction. In this Earth Archive video, we investigate why castles and brick buildings hundreds of years old still stand, while many modern buildings begin to fail within a few decades. The answer isn't in a secret recipe. It's in a logical fallacy. For centuries, medieval builders used porous bricks, thick walls, and lime mortar. This system allowed the wall to breathe, move, and release moisture. Many modern buildings, however, use dense bricks and rigid Portland cement mortar, creating hard, inflexible walls that are unable to dry properly. The result can be devastating: efflorescence, cryptoefflorescence, cracking, spalling, and bricks breaking from the inside out. You will understand: • Why Portland cement may be incompatible with brick walls; • How trapped moisture destroys masonry over time; • Why lime mortar was more breathable and flexible; • How medieval builders created walls capable of lasting for centuries; • Why “harder” doesn’t always mean “more durable”. The big question is: have we really improved construction, or have we just learned to build faster and cheaper? Warning: This content is educational and historical.
