Removing beautiful, old, puttied glass panes from a window or door without breaking them is quite a challenge. With patience and a hot air dryer, it's usually possible if handled correctly. If the window or door is going to be lye-treated anyway, the panes should be left in place. The lye-treatment also softens the putty, so it can usually be removed with a chisel.
