MK4 VW 1.8t Thermostat and Housing Replacement

In this Steve's Garage video I replace the thermostat and thermostat housing on a MK4 Volkswagen 1.8t. This is an AWP engine in a Jetta, but should work for any New Beetle or Golf with the 1.8t. This video is applicable to any MK4 VW 1.8t produced from 1999-2005. Typically the thermostat housing will crack or the thermostat will fail, prompting a replacement. A thermostat can fail in two ways - being stuck open, or being stuck closed. If the thermostat is stuck open, the car will never warm up. If the thermostat is stuck closed, it won't cool down once it gets hot. I actually had neither issue! For me, it was corrosion around the o-ring that seals the thermostat housing to the block. If you are replacing the thermostat or thermostat housing, you should replace both parts. You're in there doing one job, so you should do them both. If not, you can end up going back and having to do this procedure all over again for the other part you didn't replace.
