Lektionen aus Lützerath: Kohleausstieg und Erneuerbare Energien statt Lobby-Deals (Pao-Yu Oei)

He was a authoritative scientific voice in the fight to preserve the village of Lützerath: Pao-Yu Oei, Professor of Sustainable Energy Transition Economics at Europa-Universität Flensburg and head of the "Energy and Environmental Management" (EUM) course. Together with colleagues, he has calculated that coal under Lützerath is not needed to guarantee Germany's security of electricity supply. The mining of lignite under Lützerath made neither economic sense nor could it be justified in terms of climate policy, says Pao-Yu Oei. For him, Lützerath is therefore a symbol of a misguided energy and climate policy: "This is a policy that gives greater weight to the business profit of a single company such as RWE than to the economic costs to society of the advancing climate crisis. This crisis is the wall towards which we are currently hurtling, Oei says, and argues for a rapid expansion of renewable energies. A complete coal phase-out is technically and economically feasible by 2030, he says, and a switch to 100% renewables by 2040. Why the fear of a deindustrialization of Germany by renewables is unfounded, why neither LNG terminals nor nuclear power plants are steps in the right direction, which political measures are needed instead and why Pao-Yu Oei considers the socio-political commitment to an energy transition to be compatible with the neutrality requirement of science - this is what the member of the "scientist for future" talks about with EUF press officer Kathrin Fischer in the seventeenth episode of the "Conversations on the State of the World".
