Why Won't Melbourne Extend It's Tram Routes?
Routes 3, 5, and 67 all terminate in residential streets a few hundred metres short of train stations they could obviously connect to. Route 58 ends in Toorak when Glenferrie Road and Camberwell sit further east with no tram service at all. None of these extensions are technically difficult. None of them have happened. Melbourne's tram network hasn't had a significant extension since Vermont South in 2005 and Docklands in the late 2000s. Meanwhile, the heavy rail network has absorbed essentially all of the state's transport investment. This video looks at four short extensions in the inner south-east that would meaningfully improve the network, why they keep getting talked about and never built, and the Swanston Street capacity problem that complicates any conversation about adding tram services.
