Titanium ore is fed into reactors in batches of several hundred tons, which are operated with chlorine gas at around 1000 degrees Celsius. The reactors run continuously, and every opening in the system is sealed. After several days in the closed reduction furnace, a porous, brittle mass emerges – five to eight tons per cycle. This material is then melted under vacuum into an ingot weighing up to ten tons. Titanium is one of the most abundant metals in the Earth's crust – so why does its production take so long?
