47 Fort Phil Kearny, Fetterman & Wagon Box Fights, Wyoming: June 16, 2024 @SeniorRVTrips
A visit to three Plains Indian War sites in Wyoming: Fort Phil Kearny, The Fetterman Fight (December 21,1866) and The Wagon Box Fight (August 2, 1867). These are all located just south of Sheridan, Wyoming, east of the scenic Bighorn Mountains. These locations are part of Chief Red Cloud's war against the US Army 1866-1868. The fort, along with others, were built by the US Army to protect and keep open the Bozeman Trail to Montana. The united Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes won this war leaving the Powder River country temporarily in the hands of the Native Americans. Ultimately, Fort Phil Kearny was burned to the ground. Parts of it have been restored. https://www.fortphilkearny.com/fetter... Red Cloud Crazy Horse Colonel Henry Carrington Captain William Fetterman Lieutenant George Grummond Portugee Phillips
