I won't go into the complexities of soil science; I'll only explain the most practical and foolproof version for beginners. Different environments affect the rate of drying and the risk of root rot. Therefore, the potting mix I use at home (70% humidity, north-facing with indirect light) and in a greenhouse (super well-ventilated) are completely different.
