The Nizhny Novgorod Prosecutor's Office intends to overturn the acquittal rendered by the fourth jury in the case of a children's coach who, defending himself against a drunken group of National Guard officers, killed one of them. Overturning acquittals in jury trials is a system; they are all overturned, and this was the topic of a roundtable discussion at the Nizhny Novgorod Region Bar Association. Since the reason for this was the expected reversal of the fourth jury's acquittal in the Kukushkin case, I will once again recall this high-profile case. In 2021, on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street, a drunken group of seven National Guard officers and one civilian began harassing the wives of coach Nikolai Kukushkin and his friend Grigory Artyomenko. Following a verbal altercation, the husbands were beaten: Grigory Artyomenko was thrown to the ground and kicked, suffering a broken jaw, facial bones, and arm. Nikolai Kukushkin grabbed a Swiss Army knife and, as he puts it, began waving it around. He wounded several people with this knife. The most serious wound was inflicted on Mikhail Rashoyan, who died from this wound two hours later. He was being driven to the hospital by drunken National Guard friends, and the journey took a long time. Nikolai Kukushkin confessed, insisted on a jury trial, and the jury unanimously acquitted him. The prosecutor's office succeeded in overturning the acquittal, and Nikolai Kukushkin was tried a second time, and for the second time he insisted on a jury trial. And when, as Nikolai Kukushkin's friends say, this second jury—like the first—was inclined to acquit, it was dismissed and a new jury was assembled. The son of one of the heads of the Nizhny Novgorod Region prosecutor's office was infiltrated into the third jury, and he once bragged to the girl that he had been assigned to the jury to sway them toward a guilty verdict. The girl recorded the entire incident on her phone, and the recording was made public. The third jury was dismissed and a fourth jury was assembled. The fourth jury again acquitted him, and an acquittal was returned. But, as expected, the prosecutor's office is appealing the verdict. This practice was discussed at the roundtable.
