Llegar a Melilla, la esperanza de asilo para los rifeños de Marruecos

Melilla (Spain), August 15 (EFE) - (Images: Luis Ángel Reglero) The situation in the Rif region of Morocco has turned the Spanish city of Melilla, located in Africa, into a gateway for those persecuted in the neighboring country and seeking asylum in the hope that their voices will be heard in the European Union (EU). Beni-Enzar, the main border crossing between Spain and Morocco in Melilla, has an office to handle requests for international protection from those seeking asylum in the EU. Most come from countries at war like Syria or Iraq, arriving in Morocco after a long journey. However, in recent months, more have been arriving from neighboring Morocco, many from Al Hoceima, the Moroccan city at the epicenter of the protests in the Rif, just over 100 kilometers from Melilla.
