What is Value Study and How to Get the Most out of It
If you have been painting representational art you probably have heard other artists talking about the importance of doing value studies. But why is value study useful and what exactly should you learn from it? That's what we're talking about today. I'm going to break down the main reasons an artist need to do the value study and what type of tangible learning you should extract from it and apply it to your final artwork, so you are more confident that the finished piece will look beautiful and interesting. The most common goals of conducting a value study are: 1) Assess quality of photo and whether it will lead to a dynamic composition 2) Simply a complex subject by extracting paintable shapes 3) Form a mental model as to how to approach focal areas And in terms of the adjustments you can make based on the value study, you can: 1) Further exaggerate your idea for the painting 2) Remove ambiguous shapes or paint them as you know them (not as you see them) 3) Modify and add shapes to create a natural path for the viewer to experience the artwork In this video I will explain each of the bullet by taking you through a series of examples from my student's studies for my Patreon online class.
