Hello, my name is Gustavo Marquesine Paul. I'm a urologist specializing in andrology, and I work at the Androcenter in Curitiba. Shall we move on to today's video? In Brazil, approximately 12% of men and 9% of women are smokers. This rate has fallen in recent years, but it still represents a significant percentage of morbidity and mortality. Data from the Unified Health System indicate that tobacco-related health problems cost approximately R$40,000,000.00 (forty billion reais) each year, whether in hospitalizations, time off work, medication use to treat the consequences, or pensions for dependents of smokers who died. Two-thirds of smokers will die as a result of smoking-related problems. Smokers live on average 10 years less than people of the same age who do not smoke. Along with nicotine, cigarettes contain more than 4,500 toxic substances, more than 65 of which are proven carcinogens. The cancers most associated with smoking are cancers of the mouth, larynx, pharynx, trachea, lungs, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, gallbladder, kidneys, ureters, and bladder. It is also directly linked to heart disease, lung disease, stroke, and diabetes. Smoking causes significant harm to the vascular system, which is crucial for facilitating erections. The main cause of circulatory damage is a process called atherosclerosis. The more you smoke, the more this process intensifies. Atherosclerosis causes the arteries to become clogged with fatty plaques, which, over time, impairs blood flow to the organs. By reducing blood flow to the penis, it can lead to erectile problems. Data from the American Heart Association shows that smokers who smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day have 60% more erectile dysfunction than men who have never smoked. Fortunately, this harmful effect can be partially reduced after smoking cessation. After one year of smoking cessation, 25% of patients experience improvement in their erectile function. Nicotine also causes a reduction in genital response in typically arousing situations. A randomized study showed that after using 6mg of nicotine, women experienced a 30% reduction in their physiological arousal when exposed to a naturally arousing situation. And it's not just active smoking that causes problems; passive smoking also has deleterious effects. Therefore, the person smoking next to you is not only harming themselves, but also everyone around them. Smoking negatively affects fertility in both men and women. In men, smoking has been associated with decreased semen volume, sperm count, sperm motility, and worsened morphology and DNA quality of germ cells. This reduces the chances of natural pregnancy and the success of assisted reproduction treatments. Smoking also accelerates the decline in lung function. Many smokers become breathless more quickly and have less stamina for physical tasks. This can also affect their stamina during sex. Furthermore, physical changes, such as stained teeth and bad breath, can be quite unpleasant for potential romantic partners. Smokers, while trying to quit this harmful habit, need to undergo very careful medical monitoring for early detection of cancer and cardiovascular problems. #urology #amdrology #menshealth #androcenter #cigarette #tobacco
