She moved to Cheonan due to her husband’s work transfer and was tending the garden as a hobby when he was diagnosed with cancer. However, her husband, who had been exhausted and weary from his long battle with the disease, changed. He found new hope for life by caring for small lives within the garden. Kim Mi-jeong, who works as a gardener, opened this garden to her neighbors four years ago and says she has gained another kind of joy. She finds comfort and emotional reward in their words of appreciation for her hard work in tending to the beautiful garden. ▶ From Protecting Mother’s Garden to Dreaming of a Bigger Garden In Jogok-dong, Suncheon, where old Japanese-style government residences are clustered, there is a garden featuring old trees and blooming flowers. This is the garden that artist Lee Seong-wan has been tending since moving in five years after his mother passed away. His mother was the original owner of this garden. He started this because he could not bear to abandon the garden his mother had cultivated over her entire life, but a new goal emerged when he opened the garden to the public last year. He wants to make it an even more wonderful garden so that he can remember his mother with many people for a long time. ▶ A Village Transformed by People Cultivating Private Gardens In Suncheon City, home to the first Suncheon Bay National Garden, the number of people tending private gardens has recently increased significantly. However, as walls were lowered and the gates to private gardens began to open, changes occurred within the village community. On the day of tending the small village garden, the footsteps of the residents of Jeojeon-dong, Suncheon City, quicken. ▶ Haakere Village in Denmark, Planned and Developed as a Garden Village: A Way to Experience the Big Nature in a Small Garden In Denmark, where the season for enjoying gardens is short due to the cold weather in Northern Europe, there is a garden village with a unique shape. It is a circular village where 15-pyeong (approximately 50 square meters) houses are located in a pizza shape along the edges, surrounded by a garden three times larger. It was specially designed and established in the 1960s for low-income families who could not afford to maintain private gardens. Upon becoming a village resident, one must cultivate hedges between neighboring houses according to designated standards and actively participate in tending to both their private gardens and the village communal garden.
