UDC Forum: Public Education Success Story

The topic of this program is Public Education: A Success Story. Mr. Jerome Shelton, a third generation Washingtonian, who received the foundation of his education in the Washington D.C. Public Schools. He is a 1971 graduate of The District of Columbia Teachers College where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education. He obtained a Master of Arts degree in Guidance and Counseling from Trinity College in Washington, DC and earned extensive post-master's credits at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. His subsequent educational training includes studies and certification from the American University and Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Jerome began his teaching career at John Burroughs Elementary School, followed by administrative appointments at all levels of the DCPS system. He served as Assistant Principal at Bunker Hill Elementary and Principal of Harrison Elementary where he attended first and second grades. At the secondary level he served as Assistant Principal of Dunbar High School and Principal of Fort Lincoln Community School, Dix Street Academy and Eastern High School until he retired in 2002. Mr. Shelton is a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of the District and serves in the position of Secretary. He talks about his story of public education in the District of Columbia and the challenges currently faced by the University Board as it seeks to advance the public higher education mission of the University in the 21st century.
