In the past, many people believed that marriage and childbirth were inevitable stages of life. However, for many young people today, marriage is no longer a must, and the desire to have children is even lower, as evidenced by the record-low birth rate year after year. Therefore, the factors influencing the decision to have children—from housing pressure and career development to quality of life and self-actualization—are becoming increasingly complex. Taiwan's birth rate has declined for ten consecutive years, from 208,000 in 2016 to a halved figure of only 107,000 by 2025. Despite Taiwan's per capita income surpassing that of Japan and South Korea, it has become the country with the "least desire to have children" globally. Faced with the crisis of declining birth rates, President Lai Ching-te proposed the "National Support for Children Aged 0-18" plan, hoping to alleviate the burden of childcare for families through a monthly growth allowance of NT$5,000. However, with the government preparing to invest hundreds of billions of NT dollars annually, can this truly be a solution to encourage childbirth?
