School is the very place where an understanding and experience of the principle of secularism is forged. However, this principle, perceived as the cornerstone of the French public school system, sometimes seems to be called into question. So, how do we respond to a student who challenges a scientific lesson? How can we work collectively, with students and parents, to transform their vision of secularism, sometimes perceived as restrictive, and reaffirm its protective and emancipatory nature? After a historical overview of the development of secularism in France, Iannis Roder will address very practical questions rooted in the realities on the ground.
