Bondy and Quilicura have similar characteristics: they are outlying districts with young populations and a similar socioeconomic level. The difference lies in something much simpler and much harder to ignore: the spaces available for playing sports. In Bondy, the club where Mbappé took his first steps was a 15-minute walk from his home. In Quilicura, the available spaces are few and far between, and often difficult to access. And this isn't just the case in Quilicura, but in practically every city in Chile. In this video, I analyze and discuss why Chile has reached this point. And the answer has a name and surname: the State allowed for very few spaces, and by the time it wanted to do something about it, it was already too late. Malls and shopping centers have taken over most of the city where a park or sports center could have existed. It's no coincidence that in the last Pan American Games held in our country, the bowling competition had to be held inside a Happyland. Added to this are the distances, the feeling of insecurity that makes parents think twice before letting their children go out to train, schools with concrete playgrounds and the scarcity of physical education classes, as well as the few sports clubs that exist—and those that are not well distributed throughout the city. The result is that in Chile, players with innate talent for soccer may have been born who never found a field, a coach, or a park near their home. And that's not bad luck.
