Xidi and Hongcun are ancient villages built in the Anhui architectural style, nearly a thousand years old. Their houses share similar styles, colors, and materials, and their founding histories are quite similar, earning them the nickname "twin villages." Xidi was developed by ancient families, leading to its prosperity, particularly in trade. Hongcun also received assistance from the most prominent family in its development and growth. However, the styles and lifestyles of each village give them distinct characteristics. The best way to transform ancient villages into tourist destinations is to preserve their original atmosphere. Visitors hardly need to imagine what ancient communities were like. Both villages have been meticulously preserved to maintain their original state as much as possible, becoming examples of distinctive medieval architecture that has endured for hundreds of years.
