Every year, Americans consume 2.5 billion liters of this beverage, and most of it comes from Florida, where more than 3 billion oranges are picked and squeezed each year. But how do those 3 billion oranges turn into more than 250 million liters of juice? This video will show how orange juice is produced on an industrial scale. The Harvest Once the oranges reach their ideal level of sweetness, it's time to begin the harvest. In some orchards, workers still pick the oranges by hand and carefully place them in bags. But since the factory needs millions of oranges every day, a faster and more efficient method is used for large-scale production, as small imperfections don't matter as much if the oranges go directly to the juicer. That's where this huge harvester comes in. As it moves over the trees, vibrating arms shake the branches, causing the ripe oranges to fall onto a conveyor belt system. They are then transferred to a specialized harvesting vehicle called a "goat," which moves in the adjacent row. It has the capacity to harvest up to two tons per minute (more than two million oranges a day). You may wonder why some oranges remain green. Surprisingly, their color has nothing to do with ripeness; it has to do with temperature, not time. Cool nights can turn the skin orange, while warmer nights can bring it back to green. But don't let that fool you: these green oranges are just as ripe and juicy as the deep orange ones. As long as they have reached full size, they are perfectly ready to be squeezed. When all the oranges have been harvested, the goat truck transports them to an open semi-trailer called a "gondola," strategically positioned for loading. One by one, the goats arrive and unload their cargo onto the gondola, repeating the process until the trailer is filled with about 120,000 oranges. To put this in perspective, that would be enough to produce about 10,220 liters of fresh orange juice. Arrival at the factory The oranges descend onto a rinsing platform before entering the factory. There, they are sprayed with water, then pass through rotating brushes that remove any surface contaminants, ensuring they are all pristine before reaching the juicer. Once cleaned, the oranges move on to the pre-sorting stage. Meticulous inspectors work along the belts, discarding any that are squashed, defective, or show signs of decay. Once the oranges are accepted, they continue on until they encounter a bed composed of thousands of tiny pins that gently pierce the peels, just enough to release the essential oils they contain; we'll delve into that in a moment. The oranges are then graded by size using a roller system that separates them according to their diameter. Although they're all destined for the juicer, grading by size allows each orange to fit perfectly into the appropriate extractor.
