Von - Satanic (full demo 1989)

True hawaiian black metal maniacs Von formed in 1987 in O'ahu, to then shortly after relocate in San Francisco, California and record three demos that changed black metal forever and inspired some of the poser bands you like to name themselves after Von songs. Satanic is the first cult demo from 1989 that inspired countless imitators. it's definitely the rawest of the bunch, with a recognizable ''rehearsal room'' sound to it (even though most likely to be a damp basement). This demo gives all the maniacs out there the opportunity to listen to early iterations of some of the Von classics, satanic hymns spawned from the melting pot that was the 80s underground metal/punk scene, which then went on to define a whole genre. While always remaining underdogs, what Von lost in potential credit, recognition and fame, they gained in credibility. For instance, Von was one of the few (if not the only) actually metal influences in the Darkthrone's Transilvanian Hunger concept. The bludgeoning repetition, primitive drumming and tremolo picked riffs are now a staple of black metal, but it hasn't always been like that, and Von are one of those bands that served as a bridge between the first and second wave, as early as back in the 80s. As far as inlfuences on the band itself, it's hard to tell, but I can surely hear some Cronos in the vocals, as well as feeling the same energy that used to drive Repulsion in their golden age. The liner notes of the recent NWN! vinyl reissue ignores the musical talk completely. It's a long LaVeyan monologue about the nature of humanity, and our direction and purpose as soul beings.
