Daniel Holland initially didn’t know what gay was in high school, but he knew he felt attracted to his straight best friend. However, when his friend became an evangelical Christian and got into a relationship with a girl, their friendship began to fade. Eager to find a connection with someone he could trust, he quickly formed a bond with a fellow band student. The connection was strong and though the boys felt confident enough to come out to each other, Daniel’s parents were less enthusiastic about the friendship and they were told to stop seeing each other. Later, when Daniel eventually joined a musical theater group, he formed a healthy, affirming relationship with one of his fellow castmates. Not only was the experience the “stuff you would see in movies”, it was one that would give Daniel the confidence and the roadmap he needed to come out and live a happy, optimistic life as a gay man.
