In this short video, I respond to a commonly heard statement: *“Religions cannot be tools of enslavement since they create rules, social cohesion, and spirituality.”* However, when you examine the texts, particularly in Sunni Islam, the narrative becomes much less rosy. Obligatory prayer, the threat of disbelief, internal cohesion, jizya (tax), slavery, booty, privileges granted to the Prophet, and above all, the famous, often-quoted verse: *“Whoever kills a person, it is as if he has killed all of humanity.”* However, this slogan is rarely quoted in its entirety. In this video, we read the complete verse, the following verse, and the one after that, along with what classical tafsirs (exegesis) like Tabari have to say about it.
