Elvis Presley - There Goes My Everything - The Live Comparison Series - Volume Eighty Four
Elvis had included the song among a batch of new songs, which were either recent contemporary hits, which would be in keeping with the sort of show that Vegas show catchers would expect, and newly recorded songs from his June Nashville session. The latter was likely included with his own fans in the audience in mind, and with a view to recent album releases in the next few months or so. The song itself is a typical sixties country song telling of a breakdown of a relationship and the hurt it is causing. The studio master was recorded on 8 June 1970 at RCA’s Studio B in Nashville and was the first of five songs recorded during that final day of the “Nashville Marathon”. It was completed in just three takes before Elvis and the band the moved on to “If I Were You”. All versions performed in the main showroom of The international Hotel in Las Vegas. 00:00 Version One – 11 August 1970 Midnight Show Elvis performed it twice during filming of 'That's The Way It Is', during consecutive midnight shows of 11 and 12 August, but appears not to have used again for the remainder of the engagement. This could be pure coincidence, or it could suggest by his introduction of the song, that it was an attempt to promote the upcoming 'Country' album on which the song was included. If so, it would of course have been at the mercy of the film's director and editor and inevitably both performances ended up on the cutting room floor!! The first performance was resurrected and included in 1992's 'The Lost Performances' but not for the 'That's The Way It Is’ 2001 re-edited version. This entry shows the introduction to the song in it’s proper place as the producers of the 2001 movie placed it before “Just Pretend”. 04:06 Version Two – 12 August 1970 Midnight Show One of the very few songs contained within this show not to be captured on film, was his rendition of There Goes My Everything from this show. It is possible that since the rendition from twenty four hours earlier had been captured, that another would be wasting film, a motivation that would be reinforced if the director had already made the editorial decision that he was going to exclude the song from the final edit of the movie. Indeed, the song has not featured in either the 1970 or the 2001 version of That's The Way It Is, but can be found only on 1992's The Lost Performances. 07:37 Version Three – 27 January 1971, Midnight Show 10:26 Version Four – 30 January 1971, Dinner Show 13:06 Version Five – 19 February 1971, Midnight Show You might notice a slight jump in the audio in places of this version as there are source tape imperfections. 14:51 Version Six – 22 February 191, Midnight Show This rendition As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the re-edited audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!
