Driving today I tried the remember what Japan was like to me the first time I visited in 2002. A drive down memory lane. Japan loves nostalgia. Scanning the Shibuya crossing in all its crowdedness and neon for the first time blew me away as a 7th grader. And still today. I'm happy that that childlike wonder hasn't changed. What has changed is the amount of substandard internet zombies wearing Pokemon costumes, driving around Mario Kart style, and goofballs sprinting to the middle of the Shibuya intersection, followed closely in tow by their friend Tanner, with a camera so they can get the best angle and lighting for the newest TikTok dance trend. The world is full of swine like this, and it's a shame their community has infiltrated Japan. I'd like to think I wasn't a version of this in my younger travel years, but who knows. I sure I assumed many form of this vile behavior. The reality is, if you are a first timer to Tokyo, it's hard to help yourself from thinking and behaving like this. Here are some things you have to do; Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Skytree, Sensoji Temple, Yoyogi Park, Ueno Park, Ueno Zoo, Tokyo Station (Ginza) The Imperial Palace, Meiji Jingu, Tsukiji Fish Market (new one), Yokohama Chinatown, Golden Gai, Harajuku and Akihabara to name a few. This will take you 3 days. Enjoy yourselves and make life long memories. Trust me, I'm on your side. After Tokyo leaves you wanting to escape the crowds, do it. Outside of Tokyo, but still accessible by train are places like Setagaya or Kichijoji. Less crowds, cool stuff 30 minutes outside Tokyo.
