FIFA THOUGHT IT WAS UNTOUCHABLE, AND THE MEXICANS EXPOSEED IT The "ambitious little bald guy" from FIFA arrived in Mexico with the biggest World Cup in history and only one idea on his mind: to squeeze every last penny out of every last peso. Tickets went for over 20,000 pesos. A resale platform charged 15% to the seller and ANOTHER 15% to the buyer. Almost 200,000 empty seats that later reappeared cheaper through the back door. And with that, FIFA single-handedly created the black market it claimed to want to combat. Resellers, counterfeit tickets, 14 million pesos vanished, a 90-year-old grandfather watching the game of his life from a park bench on his cell phone. Inside the stadium, no one was spared either: the cheapest beer cost 310 pesos, box owners received bills for 1.3 million pesos just for food, and bars across the country faced fines of up to 29 million pesos for showing the game on their TVs. And as if that weren't enough, they interfered with the game itself. Hydration breaks that divide the match into four quarters—right when the TV commercials come on. Coincidence, they say. But in the end, with all their multi-billion dollar operation, the most iconic image this World Cup in Mexico left us with was a duck. The duck of the woman who sells bottled water on Reforma Avenue. Merlin. Who, without a budget, without an agency, and without a manager, stole the show.
